How Much Mulch Do You Need for a Yard in Seattle?

What’s the Problem?

Let’s be honest—Seattle’s rain + mild temps = weeds with gym memberships. 😅 Without a fresh layer of bark or mulch, beds get patchy, muddy, and weedy fast. Here’s what we hear all the time:

  • “I can see soil again.” Once you’re under ~2” of cover, weeds win and moisture swings stress your plants.
  • “The beds look flat and tired.” Bark fades with sun and rain; color refreshes make a huge visual difference.
  • “How many yards do I actually need?” Ordering too little is a pain; too much costs extra and clutters the driveway.

That’s where a quick calculation (and a tidy crew) saves the day.

Quick Mulch Math (So You Order the Right Amount)

  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
  • Coverage per yard depends on depth:
Depth Sq Ft Covered per Cubic Yard
1” ~324 sq ft
2” ~162 sq ft
3” ~108 sq ft
4” ~81 sq ft
5” ~65 sq ft
6” ~54 sq ft

Formula:
Cubic Yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324

Examples (Seattle-sized beds):

  • 400 sq ft at 3”400×3 ÷ 324 ≈ 3.7Order 4 yards
  • 850 sq ft at 2”850×2 ÷ 324 ≈ 5.3Order 5.5–6 yards
  • 120 sq ft strip at 3”120×3 ÷ 324 ≈ 1.1Order 1–1.25 yards

Pro tip: Add +10% for slopes, settling, and bed edges. In Seattle’s hills, edges “eat” bark faster than you think.

Which Mulch or Bark Should I Choose?

  • Medium/Fine Bark (hemlock or fir): Classic, tidy look; good weed suppression; color holds well.
  • Play Chips / Cedar Chips: Great for kid zones or muddy paths; bright, clean vibe; breaks down slower.
  • Compost Blend (as base) + Bark Cap: Boosts soil health then locks it in with bark.
  • Natural Wood Grind / Arborist Chips: Budget-friendly for large areas and slopes (less uniform look).
  • Gravel in High-Drain Areas: Zero-mud paths and side yards; pair with fabric for the cleanest lines.

Seattle note: Skip fabric under shrubs/perennials unless you’re doing gravel—plants appreciate organic matter as bark breaks down.

How Much Depth Is Right?

  • 2”: Freshen up looks, top off last year’s mulch, light weed control.
  • 3”: Sweet spot for most beds—solid weed suppression + moisture retention.
  • 4–6”: Ivy/blackberry rehab, steep slopes, or long gaps between visits.

Our Annual Maintenance Plan

  • Deep Clean + Mulch Reset: We weed, edge, prune, then install the right depth of bark so the yard starts tidy.
  • Seasonal Top-Offs: Keep the 2–3” target so weeds don’t surge mid-season.
  • Invasive Watch: We monitor for ivy/blackberry/bamboo pushback and spot-treat before it spreads.
  • Add-Ons When Needed: Gravel refresh for side yards, soil/compost boost, or drainage tweaks.

We’re a low-maintenance landscaping crew. Our goal is fewer problems between visits and less work for you.

Service Cadences

  • Quarterly — spring/fall deep clean + two tune-ups
  • Bi-Monthly — great balance for most Seattle yards

(If your hedges/ivy grow fast, ask about monthly—easy to add.)

What Annual Maintenance Includes

  • Bed prep: deep weeding, crisp trench edges, and clean lines around paths/fences
  • Pruning/Trimming: shrubs and small trees shaped for light, air, and sidewalk clearance
  • Mulch/Bark Install: measured by the yard, raked smooth with consistent depth
  • Hauling & Disposal: debris out, driveway rinsed, sidewalks blown clean
  • Optional Upgrades: gravel paths, play chip zones, compost boosts, and plant installs

Why Annual Maintenance Matters

  • Weed pressure stays low (especially with 3” coverage and good edges)
  • Plants are happier thanks to consistent moisture and cooler soil temps
  • Curb appeal lasts—fresh color and texture through our rainy season
  • Lower long-term cost than big “rescue” clean-ups every other year

How It Works

  1. Free Estimate — photo/video or quick walkthrough; clear, upfront pricing
  2. Set Your Schedule — quarterly, bi-monthly, or monthly
  3. Service Day — clear, prune, edge, and (optional) mulch/gravel & lawn refresh
  4. Follow-Up — simple care tips, plus easy add-ons when you want them
