West Seattle New Sod Installation Services
A good lawn isn’t just fresh rolls of green. If you skip soil work, grading, or watering setup, you’ll buy the same lawn again next year. We install the right sod on the right base, then give you a simple care plan so it roots fast and holds up.
We serve Admiral, Alaska Junction, Alki, Fauntleroy, Arbor Heights, Delridge, Gatewood, High Point, Morgan Junction, and Roxhill.
What’s the Problem?
- Patchy, muddy lawn with moss and weeds doing better than grass
- Low, bumpy grade holding puddles (winter soup → summer dust)
- Old turf installed on subsoil—no compost, no drainage, no chance
- Sprinklers overspray walks/beds, rotors don’t match precipitation rate
- Shade + heavy traffic + wrong grass mix (it never had a shot)
What You Get (and why it works)
- Soil test + site read — we check compaction, grade, shade, and irrigation reality
- Proper base — strip old turf, loosen subsoil, add compost/topsoil blend, laser/board grade, roll
- Right sod for West Seattle — cool-season blends (perennial rye/blue), shade-tolerant fine fescues, or eco-mix with microclover if you want lower inputs
- Tight seams, no stretch — staggered joints, edges pinned at walks, full contact with the base
- Starter program — roll for root contact, water-in plan, and (if a soil test calls for it) a light starter feed
- Irrigation tune — fix coverage, match precipitation, set a simple schedule (or we install new MP rotators)
Straight talk: sod won’t fix deep shade or poor drainage. We’ll tell you where grass won’t succeed and give you better options (groundcovers, gravel, or mulch).
Quick Coverage Math (so ordering is clean)
Measure area (sq ft) → that’s how much sod you need. Add 5–10% for cuts/curves.
Topsoil/compost: 1 cubic yard covers ~324 sq ft @ 1”.
- Example: 800 sq ft lawn, add 2” blend → 800 × 0.167 ft = 134 cu ft ≈ 5 yd³.
Aftercare Timeline (no guesswork)
- Days 0–7: Keep sod + top 1” of soil evenly moist. 2–3 short waterings/day in warm weather.
- Days 8–14: Reduce frequency, increase depth. Check corners/edges for lift; re-roll if needed.
- First mow: when grass hits 3–3.5”, cut to ~2.5–3” with a sharp blade. Never remove >⅓ of height.
- Weeks 3–4: Shift to deep, infrequent watering. Light, test-driven feed only if needed.
- Traffic: normal foot traffic after ~2–3 weeks; sports/dogs after 4–6 weeks (site/weather dependent).
Our Annual Maintenance Plan (Your Yard’s Routine)
- Mow right — 2.5–3” height; sharp blade; no scalping edges
- Water smart — seasonal timer updates; catch-cup tests; deep, infrequent cycles
- Compost topdress — light cap in spring to build soil biology
- Aerate & overseed — where traffic compacts or shade thins the stand
- Moss & weed prevention — fix shade/drainage; dense turf + correct pH beats chemicals
We’re a low-maintenance landscaping crew. Our goal is fewer problems between visits and less work for you.
Service Cadences (Pick What Fits)
- Quarterly — spring/fall deep clean + two lawn tune-ups
- Bi-Monthly — great balance for most West Seattle lawns
(Brand-new installs or high-traffic yards? We can start monthly for 60–90 days, then taper.)
What Annual Maintenance Includes
- Seasonal irrigation audit (coverage, leaks, timing)
- Edge re-cut along walks/bed lines so the lawn looks sharp
- Targeted weed pulls/spot treatments (IPM-first)
- Compost topdressing and light overseed where thin
- Soil notes + simple adjustments (mowing height, water, traffic patterns)
Why Annual Maintenance Matters
- Deeper roots, fewer brown spots — consistent watering and height = resilience
- Less moss/weed pressure — dense turf outcompetes the freeloaders
- Lower water bills — tuned zones and smart cycles prevent waste
- Longer sod life — healthy soil and correct cuts beat replacement costs
