Des Moines Compost Top Dressing Services

Hey there, Des Moines! 🌱 Is your garden looking a bit lackluster? Is your lawn starting to resemble a desert by mid-summer? Don’t sweat it! The issue often lies beneath the surface—your soil needs some TLC! Our compost top dressing services are designed to breathe new life into your garden by enhancing soil structure, nourishing beneficial microbes, and improving moisture retention. Let’s get your yard thriving!

What’s Going On Down There?

  • Compacted, hydrophobic soil that repels water rather than soaking it in
  • Thin, tired lawns with unsightly bald patches and pesky thatch
  • Nutrient-deficient beds showing symptoms like yellowing leaves and sluggish growth
  • Just a layer of bark without any nutrient-rich organic matter to nourish those roots
  • Traditional fertilizers that provide a quick fix but leave you hanging after a few weeks

Our Secret Sauce (And Why It Works!)

  • Screened, peat-free compost: stable, mature, and low in odor—because no one wants a stinky yard!
  • Perfect depth for the job:
    • Lawns: we’ll apply about ¼” (0.25”) of top dressing and broom or drag it in for even coverage
    • Beds: we’ll give it a ½–1” cap while ensuring we keep 2–3” away from stems, trunks, and siding
  • Custom add-ons as needed: biochar blend for sandy spots or coarse compost for heavy clay areas

Just a heads-up: compost is not mulch! While compost feeds the soil, mulch (like bark or wood chips) mainly protects it. We like to layer a thin compost cap under the bark for the best of both worlds!

Quick Coverage Math (So You Can Keep Track)

  • 1 cubic yard covers: approximately 1,296 sq ft at ¼”, 648 sq ft at ½”, or 324 sq ft at 1”
  • Examples:
    • 1,000 sq ft lawn @ ¼” → about 0.8 yd³ (it’s best to order 1 yd³)
    • 500 sq ft beds @ 1” → you’ll need 1.5–2 yd³ (round it to 2 yd³)

Your Yard’s Annual Maintenance Plan (Keeping It Fresh!)

  • Seasonal top dressing — we’ll apply compost exactly where it needs to go, adjusting depths for turf vs. beds
  • Targeted aeration — using hand tools or mechanical methods to break up tight soil (no lawn cores scattered into your flower beds!)
  • Smart mulch strategy — compost cap first, then bark where you want long-lasting cover
  • Irrigation adjustments — we’ll tweak timers post-application; compost changes the way soil holds moisture
  • Soil notes — we keep a simple log of what we added, where, and when

We’re all about making your landscaping low maintenance! Our mission is to minimize your headaches between visits and lighten your workload.

Choose Your Service Cadence (Find Your Fit)

  • Quarterly — spring/fall deep clean plus two tune-ups
  • Bi-Monthly — the perfect balance for most Des Moines yards

(Got new installations or really tired soil? Let’s start with a heavier first application and then taper down.)

What’s Included in Annual Maintenance

  • Rake-out, weed pass, and clean bed edges before we spread the compost
  • Measured compost application (no burying crowns or smothering grass!)
  • Light lawn drag/broom-in so the compost settles nicely into the soil
  • Irrigation check (emitters/timers) and slope awareness to ensure material stays put
  • Final clean-up of hard surfaces—no slippery compost on your paths or drains

Why Annual Maintenance Matters

  • Holds water longer — enjoy fewer, deeper waterings and better drought resistance
  • Feeds soil life — healthier roots mean fewer pests and less reliance on fertilizers
  • Loosens compaction — welcomes more air into the root zone for improved drainage during winter
  • Greener, steadier growth — say goodbye to spikes and crashes from synthetic feeds
  • Cleaner beds — a compost cap under bark helps keep weeds at bay and ensures even color

How It Works

  1. Free Estimate — send us photos/videos or arrange a quick walkthrough; we promise clear, upfront pricing
  2. Set Your Schedule — choose quarterly, bi-monthly, or monthly services
  3. Service Day — we’ll weed, edge, and top dress (plus optional mulch/gravel & lawn refresh)
