The work itself isn’t complicated. It just takes time, labor, tools, and somewhere to put all the material when you’re finished.

This is another situation where our Neat & Tidy cleanup cycle applies.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again:

Weed. Trim. Prune. Rake. Haul.

That cycle applies to almost every type of yard cleanup we do.

If you have an overgrown property like Bonnie’s with blackberry, ivy, bamboo, volunteer trees, brush, or other vegetation growing through or over the fence, you can only trim it back for so long.

Eventually, you have to decide how much control you actually want.

You can simply cut everything back and haul it away. That gives you immediate clearance, but the vegetation is going to grow back.

Or you can take it further and work on crowns, roots, runners, rhizomes, and other regenerative parts of the plants where practical.

That takes significantly more labor.

And that’s the type of service we provide.

But homeowners can absolutely do this themselves.

Let’s be clear about that.

This isn’t proprietary software. There’s no secret landscaping technology involved. You need some technique, some basic tools, hauling capacity, and enough time to actually finish the job.

For Bonnie’s property specifically, she has brush, volunteer growth, debris, and bamboo encroaching toward her yard. Bamboo is its own problem because cutting the canes does not eliminate the underground rhizome system, but the general cleanup process still starts the same way.

A greenbelt can be a beautiful backdrop, but blackberry, ivy, bamboo, and volunteer growth don’t care where your fence ends.

First, establish the area you want to reclaim.

For a property like this, I like a meaningful buffer. Something around five feet can give you real working room where the property allows it.

If you only cut back six inches or a foot, you really haven’t bought yourself much time.

The vegetation is going to come right back toward the fence.

Once you establish your buffer, start clearing.

Remove weeds and unwanted vegetation. Cut unwanted saplings or volunteer trees where appropriate. Remove accessible crowns and roots from invasive plants when practical. Cut back shrubs and brush that are outside your main clearing area.

Then rake everything out and haul it away.

Some of the tools you can use are pretty basic:

Garden hoes, loppers, pruning saws, pickaxes, grub hoes, shovels, steel rakes, pitchforks, tarps, buckets, wheelbarrows, and whatever cutting equipment is appropriate for the size of the vegetation.

You don’t need every tool on that list.

You just need the right tools for what is actually growing on your property.

The biggest thing people underestimate is the amount of material.

You might look at a five-foot strip along a fence and think, “That doesn’t look too bad.”

Then you cut everything down.

Now you have a giant pile of branches, blackberry canes, vines, roots, leaves, dirt, and brush sitting in the backyard.

That material has to go somewhere.

That is why this work is usually easier with a group.

As the square footage of the buffer increases, the labor increases with it.

One person can absolutely do it, but once you have a long property line and dense vegetation, it becomes a pretty daunting weekend project.

Three or four people can attack it completely differently.

One person cuts.

One person pulls.

One person rakes.

One person hauls.

That’s where the efficiency comes from.

Bonnie’s property also backs up against a greenbelt.

That changes things.

A greenbelt is basically an area where vegetation is allowed to grow much more naturally than a maintained residential yard. Depending on the site, you may have native plants mixed with aggressive invasive species like blackberry, ivy, or bamboo.

That means you should not expect the vegetation outside your maintained area to suddenly stop growing.

Nature doesn’t care where your fence is.

If you want a clean buffer, you have to maintain that buffer.

You can do a simple cut-and-haul service and expect to come back periodically.

Or you can spend more time removing crowns and accessible root systems to slow down regrowth.

For some weeds and shallow-rooted vegetation, landscape fabric may also help suppress new growth by reducing available sunlight. But I would not treat fabric as a permanent solution, especially for aggressive plants like bamboo, blackberry, ivy, or woody vegetation.

Those plants can grow through, underneath, around, or beyond barriers if the underlying growth system is still active.

Fabric is control.

It is not magic.

For Bonnie, we’re looking at creating a larger buffer behind the fence and adding some trimming beyond that buffer so the vegetation looks maintained rather than just chopped off.

Her actual property line extends beyond where the fence was installed.

Originally, that extra area probably wasn’t very important. The backyard itself felt large enough.

But now vegetation is starting to encroach toward the fence, so that unused space suddenly matters.

She wants to buy herself more room and more time before everything grows back toward the backyard again.

That’s what we’re providing a quote for.

And this is where cost comes into the conversation.

If you want to do this for almost nothing, do it yourself.

Seriously.

Get some friends or family together, buy or borrow the tools, spend a weekend cutting and digging, and figure out how you’re going to dispose of everything.

It is completely doable.

But if you hire a contractor to bring a crew, trucks, tools, insurance, hauling capacity, and people who do this every week, then yes, it is going to cost money.

You’re paying to compress that labor.

Something that might take a homeowner several weekends can sometimes be knocked out by a crew in a day or two depending on the property.

And even if you decide to use herbicide as part of a vegetation-management plan, you still have the physical biomass sitting there.

Dead blackberry canes are still blackberry canes.

Dead bamboo is still bamboo.

Branches still have to be cut.

Vines still have to come off the fence.

Material still has to be hauled away.

There really isn’t a shortcut around the cleanup part.

This is something homeowners sometimes don’t think about when they buy a property next to a greenbelt.

You see that beautiful green backdrop and think, “Awesome. I have trees and greenery behind my house.”

And you do.

But sometimes mixed into that greenery are aggressive plants that grow incredibly fast during spring and summer.

Then suddenly blackberry is coming through the fence, ivy is climbing everything, volunteer trees are appearing, or bamboo is moving underground.

Now you have a maintenance problem.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you bought a bad property.

It just means you have to manage the edge between the maintained part of your yard and the wild area behind it.

You don’t need a landscaping company to clear an overgrown fence line. You need tools, hauling capacity, time, and preferably a few people willing to help.

Follow the cycle:

Weed. Haul.

Create a meaningful buffer.

Remove roots and crowns where it makes sense.

Expect regrowth.

Maintain it before it becomes a jungle again.

And if hiring a contractor isn’t in the budget, that’s completely fine.

Do five feet this weekend.

Do another five feet next weekend.

Keep working your way down the property line.

You don’t need us to do it.

You can absolutely do this yourself.

Just understand that you’re trading money for time and labor.

And if you’re doing a large property like Bonnie’s, get some help.

This is much better as a group project than spending three weekends alone fighting blackberry behind your fence.

My customer Bonnie has been living with a problem.
