This is a good time to get your yard tidy, keep the way into your home clear, and take care of obvious problems before the storms arrive.

Start with access. Clear weeds and overgrown vegetation around your driveway, stairs, sidewalks, and the path to your front door. Trim shrubs that make those spaces narrow or block your view. You don’t need to redo the whole yard to make it easier and safer to use.

Seattle’s trees are about to put on their fall colors—and then drop their leaves. Beautiful to look at, but another round of seasonal yard maintenance is right behind them.

Next, look at what’s close to the house. Are shrubs rubbing against the siding or covering a window? Are branches hanging over a walkway or touching the roof? Fall cleanup is a chance to cut back reachable growth, rake up debris, and see what needs more attention.

Landscaping can reduce some avoidable problems, but no one can promise how plants or trees will behave in a winter storm. Leave large limbs, trees near power lines, and work that requires climbing to qualified professionals.

Then decide where to spend your effort. Maybe the front entry matters most this year. Maybe it’s a side path you use every day, or a backyard that has become hard to reach.

A heavy layer of fallen leaves can cover the lawn, blocking sunlight and trapping moisture. Rake and remove them before prolonged coverage begins damaging the grass. Seattle, Washington.

Choose those areas first. Clearing everything at once costs more and takes more time, whether you hire a crew or do the work yourself.

A lot of this is DIY friendly: pulling weeds, raking leaves, and trimming small shrubs. You either pay a contractor or put in your own time, tools, and labor. Do what you’re comfortable doing, and get help for the heavy or difficult parts.

Fallen leaves collecting along a walkway and retaining wall. Seattle, Washington.

The goal isn’t to make the yard perfect before winter. It’s to keep access open, remove the excess growth and debris, and make spring cleanup easier. The plants will keep growing, so get ahead of what you can now.

Field note: If your budget or time is limited, start at the front door and work outward.
