A lot of customers ask us to install it as part of a full yard cleanup. We weed the beds, trim the shrubs, prune the trees, rake and haul away the debris, blow off the hard surfaces, and spread fresh bark.

When we do the whole job, we bring the bark to the property and dump it somewhere accessible, often the driveway. Then we clean the yard, load the waste, and install the bark. The customer gets a clean yard and finished garden beds in one trip. Sometimes it makes more sense to install the bark on a separate day, but the idea is the same: we handle the work from start to finish.

Simple yards, simple garden beds – Seattle WA

So what’s the secret to saving money on bark installation? Do the installation yourself.

You can buy bark from a landscape supplier, pick it up, bring it home, and spread it yourself. You can also pay the supplier to deliver it and handle the spreading. The material is often the less expensive part of the job. A good portion of what you pay a landscaper for is the time, truck, tools, and labor needed to move it.

A typical Seattle yard might need anywhere from one to six cubic yards for its garden beds. That can mean moving hundreds or thousands of pounds of material, depending on the bark and how wet it is. It sounds simple until you’re halfway through the pile with a wheelbarrow.

Clear the weeds first, then spread the bark to the depth you want. Around 2 to 4 inches is a useful range for many beds, depending on the coverage you’re after. Keep it away from tree trunks and plant stems. Bark can help suppress weeds and make the ones that do appear easier to pull, but it won’t make a garden bed weed-free. How long it lasts depends on the material, the depth, the weather, and the conditions already in the bed.

Customer doesn’t have time to bark – So we helped install to save him time.

If you have the time, tools, and a way to get the bark home, you can save hundreds of dollars by doing the work yourself. If you don’t have a truck, get it delivered. And if your time is worth more to you than the installation cost, hire a landscaper to take care of it.

Bark is light in a bag, heavy in yards, we use wheel barrows to install – Seattle WA

Field note: Bark is easy to spread, but a full yard’s worth is a lot to move.
