Blackberry, Ivy & Overgrown Yard Cleanup: Paul’s Property Restoration

Scope: Five crew members, 7.5 crew hours, approximately 10 cubic yards and 2,500 pounds of debris. Day-rate project.

We deal with blackberry and ivy almost every day. We cut, trim, remove accessible roots, rake, and haul everything away. We take care of the whole process. Here’s a blackberry, ivy, and overgrown yard cleanup we completed for our customer, Paul.

The stories behind these properties are often pretty similar, and I feel for the customers. A yard gets neglected. Maintenance gets pushed aside as life throws curveballs. Things get away from people.

Sometimes the property owner is getting older. Sometimes family members or caretakers are stepping in to help. Sometimes life just gets complicated. I think we can all understand that.

And honestly, some of these stories are pretty heartbreaking.

Before: Blackberry and ivy have taken over this yard. There’s so much overgrowth, you can barely recognize what’s underneath.
After: A complete transformation. The patio is exposed, weeds are cut back, and shrubs are trimmed.

You talk to customers, hear what they’ve been dealing with, and realize that the yard is just one more problem on top of everything else going on in their lives.

Dump truck: Salem, our dump truck, filling up toward the end of the day. The load looks high before we finish arranging it for hauling.
Before: The front rock bed is completely covered in overgrowth.
During: Work in progress, ivy clearing and waste hauling.
After: The rocks are exposed and the ivy is trimmed back.

But from our side, the good thing is that we can help with that part.

Nature Doesn’t Stop. Life Doesn’t Either.

Blackberry keeps growing. Ivy keeps spreading. Shrubs get bigger. Trees drop debris. Weeds keep coming back. Nature doesn’t stop. And life doesn’t stop either.

People get busy. Families go through difficult times. Priorities change. Sometimes maintaining the yard simply isn’t at the top of the list.

Before you know it, a property that was once manageable becomes a substantial cleanup project. That’s where we come in.

Before: The front gate and entrance to the backyard are overgrown and crowded.
After: The stairway is exposed, and the entrance is cleared and trimmed. There’s still more work to do, but you can get through now.

Our Yard Cleanup Process

Our process is pretty simple:

Weed. Trim. Prune. Rake. Haul.

We remove unwanted vegetation, trim and prune the plants that should stay, rake and clean the property, and haul away the waste. Simple process.

But on a property like this, it’s not necessarily simple work.

When blackberry, ivy, shrubs, weeds, volunteer plants, and years of accumulated debris all start growing together, you need people who know how to work through it without destroying everything.

You need to identify what stays and what goes. You need the right tools. You need hauling capacity. You need a dump truck.

And most importantly, you need enough labor to actually move all that material off the property. That’s what our team provides.

Before: The left side of the backyard patio is buried in overgrowth.
After: The patio and garden beds are exposed again. There’s still more work ahead for this restored yard.

Getting the Property Back Under Control

Not every customer needs a complete landscape restoration. Some homeowners want their entire yard cleaned up and restored.

Others simply need the vegetation cut back, walkways cleared, shrubs maintained, and the property brought back to a reasonable standard.

Sometimes family members are helping an older relative manage a property that’s become too difficult to maintain. Whatever the situation, we work toward the customer’s goals and the approved scope of work.

The objective isn’t always to make a yard perfect.

Sometimes it’s simply about making the property manageable again.

And that can make a meaningful difference for someone who already has plenty of other things to worry about.

Before: Years of leaves and debris cover the upper patio near the solarium entrance.
After: The stairs and brick patio are exposed again. Everything around the entrance is trimmed and looking good.

Paul’s Blackberry, Ivy & Yard Cleanup Project

For Paul’s property, we were dealing with a combination of overgrown vegetation, including blackberry, English ivy, shrubs, weeds, and accumulated yard debris.

These are the kinds of projects where everything starts growing into everything else. Blackberry canes spread across the ground and into nearby plants. Ivy climbs and covers surrounding vegetation. Shrubs become overgrown, and volunteer plants begin filling whatever space is available.

The work involves more than simply cutting everything down.

We have to work through the vegetation, clear the unwanted growth, preserve the plants that should remain, and clean up the property as we go. It’s physical, labor-intensive work, especially when the vegetation has been left unmanaged for years.

But that’s exactly the type of work our crew handles.

Field Notes

A few things we’ve learned from working on overgrown properties around Seattle:

There’s usually a story behind the yard. Neglected landscaping doesn’t necessarily mean someone doesn’t care. Sometimes homeowners are dealing with circumstances that make maintenance difficult.

Nature doesn’t wait. Blackberry, ivy, weeds, and shrubs continue growing regardless of what’s happening in someone’s life.

Everything grows together. On older, neglected properties, unwanted vegetation often becomes tangled with established shrubs, trees, fences, and garden beds.

You can’t just cut everything down. A good cleanup requires identifying what should stay, what should be removed, and how to work around existing landscaping.

Hauling is a major part of the job. Cutting vegetation is one thing. Loading, transporting, and disposing of years of accumulated growth is another.

Not every yard needs a complete restoration. Sometimes a substantial cleanup is enough to make the property manageable again.

Maintenance still matters. Once the property is cleaned up, ongoing trimming, weeding, and monitoring help prevent the vegetation from taking over again.

The Work Behind the Cleanup

The landscaping part is straightforward. The circumstances behind it usually aren’t.

For us, the job is to show up, understand what the customer needs, do the physical work, and leave the property in better condition than we found it.

Sometimes that means a complete restoration. Sometimes it means getting years of growth back under control. Either way, it’s one less problem the customer has to deal with.
